So the morons at the Phoenix City council are thinking about putting a sales tax on any food sold in the city of Phoenix. A food tax will hit the poor the hardest while the rich who eat out a lot won't even notice it. The city of Phoenix got into the financial mess it's in because of sheer stupidity. Spending millions on "Art" for new parks while we are in a recession furthers the point that many of these snobs on the Phoenix city council no longer grasp that most of Phoenix's residents make no where near the money they do and a tax on food may be the last straw that causes voters to clean house.

The truth remains that the City does need money and they have no real idea how to get it so I will propose a few ideas.
Phoenix could issue:

1) A 1/2 cent sales tax on all dine in transactions at restaurants a small tax that wouldn't hurt anyone who couldn't afford it because eating out is a luxury.

2) A "junk food" tax on items like soda, candy, potato chips etc... Basically foods that are causing Americans to be overweight get a "sin tax" or "fat tax. You could do like a percentage tax or a tax of like five cents per can of soda. etc...

3) This may not be a popular choice but cut down on the number of emergency responders that go to each call. For example for a minor car accident many times you see as many as 6 police cars respond yet only 2 officers do any work wile the rest just sit around and talk. This option is probably the least likely because both Phoenix Police and fire have really strong unions.

4) Stop offering pensions for public employees. Private companies, with a very few exceptions, don't provide pensions. Let them put money into a 401K or IRA for retirement, don't expect the citizens to continue paying you NOT to work for decades after they retire. Most cities, you can retire after 20-25 years with a full pension.

5) Don't spend money you don't have. Don't take on any new projects until the city has the money to pay for it. It's common sense don't count your chickens before they hatch.
